Addiction Medicine Program:
Healthcare Professionals Stream
Caring For Those Who Care For Us
Treatment and recovery can be a difficult process for healthcare professionals struggling with addiction, because the skills they have worked so hard to acquire can be the very things that get in the way of recovery.
At the Homewood Health Centre, we know how to address the barriers to treatment for health professionals, including the burden of shame that these patients carry. We help medical professionals with addiction to heal beyond their healthcare identity, so that they can return home and get back to treating their patients safely and with the unique skill set of recovery.
Who This Program is For
Physicians, nurses, pharmacists, dentists, veterinarians, and individuals who report to a licensing college, regulated body and/or those involved in the handling of controlled substances are eligible to participate in this program. The treatment team and/or the attending physician will use clinical judgment in the case of questionable appropriateness.
Addressing Recovery Head-on
The AMP Healthcare Professionals Stream helps patients engage effectively in recovery in a group setting twice a week where, with clinician facilitation, participants discuss:
- absence from practice
- returning to practice
- legal/licensing status
- accessibility of drugs
- prescription writing
- college hearings
- using cues in the workplace
- fear of failure
- repression of feelings
- neglect of personal needs
- threatened personal identity
- overachieving and competition; and
- stress attached to caring for others
The percentage of patients who feel treatment meets their main addiction needs
The percentage of patients who felt they learned valuable skills from the program
The percentage of patients who would recommend Homewood to others
How to Get Help
For those who are required to participate by their Professional College (i.e. physicians & surgeons, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, and pharmacists) an on-site Caduceus group is available.
To be admitted to the Homewood Health Centre, you require a referral from your doctor or other healthcare professional. We can help you with the patient referral and admissions process.
