Assessment & Stabilization Unit (ASU)

Redefining independent psychiatric assessment

Achieving an accurate diagnosis in complex cases is often challenging, but it is a critical first step in arriving at an appropriate and effective treatment plan for patients. Homewood Health Centre provides comprehensive, independent psychiatric and functional evaluations, including evaluations of individuals with complex mental health problems for insurance companies, employers and clinicians. ASU services are designed for individuals who have an unclear diagnosis, complex co-occurring conditions or those who have not responded to previous treatment.

The Gold Standard in Psychiatric Evaluation

Homewood Health Centre’s Assessment and Stabilization Unit provides Complex Case Independent Psychiatric Evaluations, conducted during a short period in an in-patient setting. The assessment is truly comprehensive, providing a longitudinal view of the individual’s clinical presentation and functional abilities and strengths. An in-patient stay also supports abstinence from substance use in a controlled environment with regular testing throughout the patient’s stay.

Clarifying issues and providing direction

Homewood’s Complex Case Independent Psychiatric Evaluations are intensive, multidisciplinary and holistic, involving a psychiatrist-led team of disciplines including: psychiatry; social work; family medicine; addiction medicine; psychology; nursing; and occupational therapy. Once the assessment is complete, the team consolidates all the information compiled over the three-week assessment into a comprehensive report sent to the referring party. The report provides an in-depth description of the patient’s current psychological functioning, including any co-occurring conditions. In addition to clarifying the diagnosis or diagnoses, the report offers recommendations on an individualized care plan which could involve in-patient treatment or treatment in the community.

"My first stay... the hospital was helpful, but I didn't give it my all. I went back to the hospital with a whole new mindset. I realized I needed to do everything I could to learn (about this disease) and understand and accept what I have to do to be productive and get back to a normal, balanced life."
