Preparing for your stay at the Homewood Health Centre

We’re here to help you get ready for admission

It is our goal to make your stay at Homewood as comfortable as possible so that you can focus on participating fully in your recovery program and getting better. The information below will answer some of the questions you might have as you prepare for admission to one of our programs. If you still have questions after reviewing this information, please contact a member of our Admitting team. For your convenience, we offer a downloadable version of our Admission Booklet (below) to help you as you prepare for your stay.

Documents to Bring on Admission Day

All patients should bring the following key documents on the day of admission: photo identification, your provincial health card, insurance information and your drug card. Ontario residents 65 years and older should also bring their drug eligibility card. If applicable, please bring any relevant power of attorney documents and health care instructions.

What to Bring

Use the list as guidance for what to bring with you when you come to Homewood.

  • Toiletries, tissues, feminine hygiene products
  • Eyeglasses, contact lenses and solution
  • Electric or disposable razor shaver, hair dryer or curling iron
  • Nightwear - housecoat, nightgown or pajamas, slippers
  • Comfortable clothing - (refer to Dress Code Guidelines)
  • Appropriate outdoor clothing for the season including winter boots, running shoes, jacket, raincoat and umbrella
  • Fitness apparel including running shoes, t-shirts and shorts
  • Alarm Clock
  • Insect repellent and sunscreen
  • Cane, walker, wheelchair or scooter
  • Hearing aids, Dentures and denture cup, prostheses
  • Incontinence supplies such as adult diapers
  • Reading materials
  • Personal items such as family photos
  • Two-inch binder, writing paper and pens/pencils for taking notes
  • You may require a small amount of cash if you wish to use the coin-operated laundry and/or purchase sundries at our gift shop (there is a banking machine available)

Note: Any personal electrical appliances must be approved by a Homewood electrician prior to use. Homewood Health is not responsible for lost, damaged or stolen items.

What Not to Bring

Do not bring anything you can not risk losing, including valuables such as: large amounts of cash, jewelry, or other important personal effects. We cannot guarantee a locked area for your valuables. 

Butane–powered appliances or heat-generating appliances such as coffee makers or halogen lamps are prohibited. Please do not bring televisions, cellular telephones, or laptop computers unless approved by the treatment team as protocols vary from program to program.

Tips for Patients

Some helpful tips to prepare you for your visit to the Health Centre. 

Our goal is for you to be healthy and happy.

We recommend wearing casual clothing or athletic gear and running shoes while participating in the physical activities. We also suggest bringing hats, sunglasses and sunscreen for outdoor activities.

You are welcome to bring personal items with you to make you more comfortable. Please be mindful and ensure that any items you bring are secure and appropriate for a setting of healing and recovery.

You may bring one large suitcase and one small bag with you on admission day. We offer coin-operated laundry facilities and many other amenities for your convenience during your stay.

We ask that you do not bring additional luggage or belongings back with you when returning from weekend therapeutic leaves or personal shopping trips. Storage space is limited at Homewood.

Getting to know Guelph
